Search Field Instruction Format

With the Auto Select function of a word processing system each record in a file contains a search field having entries specifying identifying numbers of segments in a text job to be merged with the data in specified fields of a qualified file record for creation of a document that is personalized in text content.

The search field consists of numerical entries representing page or segment numbers of the text job. Segment numbers are separated by spaces or carrier returns. Segments are specified in the order in which they are to be compiled, and the same segment may be specified more than once. Specification of the segments and segment sequence in field format allows the use of control codes within the search field to specify particular functions.

0ne page of a document may be assimilated from several segments. This is done by enclosing in asterisks (*) the group of segments used to compile one page. An example of this is as follows: 7 *3 12 6* 4. In this example, the second page of a three page document is compiled from three segments.

Large blocks of text may be inserted from the file record in addition to the segments selected from the text job. This is done by keying an insert instruction within the search field. The insert instruction consists of the field number corresponding to the text block to be selected from the record. An example of this is as follows: 7 *3 //14// 6* 4.
