Abstract

Many water-soluble fluxes are designed for use on printed-circuit boards which are processed at temperatures less than 525 degrees F. If these fluxes are used in a dip soldering process which exceeds 525 degrees F, decomposition occurs.

Water Soluble Flux

Many water-soluble fluxes are designed for use on printed-circuit boards which are processed at temperatures less than 525 degrees F. If these fluxes are used in a dip soldering process which exceeds 525 degrees F, decomposition occurs.

Two general formulas and five specific examples are given below.

General Formula 1: A. DMG or its homologues, e.g., dimethylglutaric acid,

diethyl glutarate, etc.

B. Deionized water

C. Alcohols, aliphatic types containing C(1) - C(4) carbon groups

D. CELLOSOLVES*, aliphatic types containing C(1) - C(4) carbon groups

E. Polyethylene glycols in the molecular weight range of 200-500.

General Formula 2: A. Amine hydrochloride activators, e.g. dimethylamine

hydrochloride, L-glutamate hydrochloride

B. Deionized water

C. Alcohols, aliphatic types containing C(1) - C(4) carbon groups

D. CELLOSOLVES, aliphatic types containing C(1) - C(4) carbon groups

E. Polyethylene glycols in the molecular weight range of 200-500.
