Abstract

The reversing mechanism includes pivotally mounted cartridge 10 having inked ribbon 12 therein and extending therefrom and carried by a pair of spools 14 and 16 in cartridge 10. Ribbon 12 is fixed on its ends on the center mandrels of spools 14 and 16 so that when ribbon 12 comes to the end on one of spools 14 and 16 in moving in direction X or direction Y, ribbon 12 swings cartridge 10 to interengage gear pair A or B for driving this spool in a ribbon taking-up direction to reverse the direction of movement of ribbon 12.

Gear Drive Ribbon Reversing Mechanism

The reversing mechanism includes pivotally mounted cartridge 10 having inked ribbon 12 therein and extending therefrom and carried by a pair of spools 14 and 16 in cartridge 10. Ribbon 12 is fixed on its ends on the center mandrels of spools 14 and 16 so that when ribbon 12 comes to the end on one of spools 14 and 16 in moving in direction X or direction Y, ribbon 12 swings cartridge 10 to interengage gear pair A or B for driving this spool in a ribbon taking-up direction to reverse the direction of movement of ribbon 12.

Cartridge 10 is carried by a platform 17 which is pivotally swung about stud 18, and over-center spring 20 is provided between fixed pin 22 and pin 24, carried by platform 17, so that cartridge 10 is yieldably held in either of two rotative end positions about stud 18. Ribbon 12 extends from spool 14 around fixed ribbon guide 26, the nose tip 28 of a wire printer 30 and ribbon guide 32 back to spool 16.

Gear pairs A and B are driven from drive gear 34. Gear pair A includes idler gear 36 in mesh with gear 34, and gear pair B includes idler gear 38 in mesh with idler gear 36. Gear pair A includes gear 40 having spindle 42 fixed thereto, and gear pair B includes gear 44 having spindle 46 fixed thereto. Spools 14 and 16, respectively, fit over spindles 42 and 46, and have a nonrotatable relationship with these spindles. Platform 17, cartridge 10, ribbon guides 26 and 32 and wire printer 30 constitute an assembly which is translated in directions V and W during printing action by printer 30. Gear 34 is fixed on shaft 48. Drive capstans 50 and 52 are also disposed on shaft 48, and a one-way clutch is disposed in each of the capstans 50 and 52 so that each of these capstans is effective to drive shaft 48 in only the direction p....
