Thread/Load Arrangement for Capstan/Vacuum Column Tape Drive

This article describes an automatic threading arrangement for a capstan- type drive.

Tape 4 normally extends taut between two side-by-side arranged reels 5, 6, guided around idlers 7, 8, as shown in phantom.

In operation after the reels are mounted in a tape drive apparatus 9, a front panel of the apparatus moves forwardly (toward the reader). Then, means (not shown) is automatically energized to cause two idler rolls 10, 11 to move downwardly to the positions shown. In so doing, they extend the tape past two horizontally arranged, oppositely extending vacuum columns 12, 13. Vacuum is now turned on to cause the tape to be drawn into the columns and form loops A, B, respectively; whereupon the tape will now be in the position shown, with the tape entrained around various idler rolls and capstan 14 and over a read/write head 15 interposed between two guide rolls 16, 17.
