Selective Escapement of Collator Deflector

The selective escapement of a collator deflector allows a skilled operator to increase throughput, if the operator is willing to accept a more complicated jam- recovery procedure.

Fig. 1 shows a copier 10 associated with a collator 11. In operating the copier, the operator first selects the number of copies to be made by the use of a dial (not shown). If a single-page original is being reproduced, this single page is placed on document glass 12, and the requested number of copies are stacked in exit pocket 13.

If a number of copies (i.e., collated sets) of a multipage original are to be made, the operator elects to use collator 11 by the use of a push button (not shown). As a result, the requested number of collated sets, for example N sets, appear in the first through the Nth bin of the collator 11.

Fig. 2 shows collator 11 wherein a single movable deflector 14 steps downwardly one bin at a time from a home position adjacent the first bin 15 to the Nth bin, depositing a single copy of each original page in the first through the Nth bin.

For ease of jam recovery, deflector 14 then returns in an upward direction and must reach the top bin before copier 10 may begin copying the next page of the original document. Thus, a copying delay is experienced. However, jam recovery is simplified since a jam always involves copies of only a given page of the original document.

Copier 10 includes a push button (not shown) which allows...
