Paper Edge Sensing

In printing on a sheet 10 that may be positioned imprecisely on a print drum 11, it is important that the sheet's position be sensed to insure that printing occurs only on the sheet.

Specifically, the print drum 11 is of a dark color to provide a good contrast with the sheet 10 for reflection photosensor 12. Reference edge 13 is white and is provided to give a good edge for sensor 12 to start printing on the sheet at the same point in each print scan so that a horizontal line is horizontal when printed. A timer prevents printing until a certain distance after the reference edge is sensed, and printing is cancelled if the drum, not the sheet 10, is encountered after the reference edge 13.
