Abstract

Shown in the drawing is a dip probe 1 adapted to be connected by fiber optic bundles 2 and 3 to a spectrophotometer for measuring characteristic properties of a liquid upon immersion of probe 1, using light transmitted along bundles 2 and 3. Probe 1 includes a cylindrical base member 4 having bores therein which receive the ends of bundles 2 and 3. Rigid coherent fiber-optic bundles 5 and 6 have spaced ends received in the bores in alignment with bundles 2 and 3, and have adjacent ends facing each other but separated by a gap 7. Preferably, a potting compound 8 surrounds the lower ends of bundles 5 and 6, whereby, upon immersion of probe 1 into the liquid, the liquid fills gap 7. Light thereby traverses bundle 2, bundle 5, the liquid through gap 7, bundle 6 and bundle 3.
