Abstract

A gate arm is provided against which an operator places a stack of documents to be fed into an office machine. When the machine cycle starts, the gate shaft is rotated automatically, thereby lifting the gate arm which remains up until the cycle is completed. The lifting action is caused by means of a hydrostatic journal bearing between the gate shaft and the gate arm, creating a dynamic torque on the gate arm. When power drops or when the machine cycle ends and the shaft ceases rotation, the dynamic torque drops to zero, allowing the weight moment of the gate arm to overcome static shaft friction, thus lowering the gate.

The figure shows the gate arm 10 (in solid lines) in the lowered position with a document stack 12 in position for being fed. (When the powered gate shaft 13 is rotated, an oil bearing between shaft 13 and arm 10 transmits dynamic torque to the arm to lift it to the open position shown in broken lines.
