Abstract

By attaching an optical scanner 1 to the carriage 2 of a movable printhead 3 on a typewriter, the existing mechanical hardware of the typewriter can be used to accomplish the scanning of the whole page 5. Horizontal scanning is done via the moving printhead carriage 2, and vertical scanning by the paper indexing mechanism associated with the platen 4. Scanner 1 may be a multi-element silicon diode array photosensor device including an illumination source fixed to carriage 2 to enable reading of the line just printed by printhead 3. Alternatively, a page 5 printed before can be scanned by appropriate control of carriage and/or platen indexing.
