Abstract

For ink jet printing with uncharged drops, it is desirable for improved accuracy to apply only the minimum charge to those drops that are to be discarded. However, when the print head is accelerated or decelerated rapidly, the charge attraction of the discarded drops may be insufficient to overcome the inertia of the drops so that they miss the gutter.

Variable Charges for Discarded Ink Drops

For ink jet printing with uncharged drops, it is desirable for improved accuracy to apply only the minimum charge to those drops that are to be discarded. However, when the print head is accelerated or decelerated rapidly, the charge attraction of the discarded drops may be insufficient to overcome the inertia of the drops so that they miss the gutter.

Discard in these instances may be assured by increasing the charge voltage during the periods of acceleration or deceleration. Thereafter, the charge is returned to the minimal value. An RC circuit can be used to smooth out the transition between charge levels as the rates of acceleration or deceleration change.
