Voice Coil Motor

A small diameter linear actuator of the voice coil type is designed for maximum efficiency by maximizing a cross-sectional area of magnetic return paths and minimizing the armature loop length, as well as mass, of the movable carriage portion.

The voice coil motor includes a pair of magnets disposed adjacent a movable voice coil. The coil is supported on a bobbin which, in turn, supports a head arm mount for carrying a transducer with respect to a record storage medium. The voice coil carried by the bobbin is symmetrical with a circular cross-section outside of the bobbin area, and a rectangular cross-section through the bobbin. The total voice coil shape is an extended circle which maximizes enclosed area of the return paths, particularly where the bobbin has a cross-sectional area which is a substantial portion of a normal circular voice coil.

The weight of the bobbin and carriage assembly is minimized by making the bearing paths coextensive with the magnets. Two pairs of upper bearings ride on an upper rail, while a single lower bearing pair rides on a lower rail under urging of a leaf spring.
