A hand-held optical scanner includes a removable tip which is plug mountable to both the hand-held scanner and a printhead carrier.

Hand-held optical scanner 11, which includes a pluggable tip 13, is utilized to scan bar code data or the like into control electronics (not shown) of typewriter 15 for subsequent printout. The tip 13, plugmounted to holder 11, may be removed therefrom and plugged into holder 17. Holder 17 is, in turn, secured to typehead carrier 19. Thus, when holder 17 is in its activated position, depicted in Fig. 1, and tip 13 is plugged into holder 17, tip 13 moves with type carrier 19 across platen 21 to scan optical information into the control electronics of the typewriter
