A field-access lattice translation pattern suitable for providing an idle mode, a translation up mode and a translation down mode are shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, respectively.

As shown in Fig. 1, the pattern consists of an array of permalloy squares or dots having the same periodicity as the bubbles of the lattice. The size of the squares is slightly larger than the bubble size so that the equilibrium bubble position occurs with the bubble center inside the square perimeter. As the rotating field goes through the 1, 2, 3, 4 cycle, the bubble moves around the square to the position numbered 1, 2, 3' 4'

When the rotating field is offset to the left, the bubble moves up as shown in Fig. 2. When the rotating field is offset to the right, the bubble moves down as shown in Fig. 3.

The idle mode allows for columns of the bubbles to be removed from a lattice in a rotating field mode by, for example, using current-assisted propagation, and changes of the field amplitude during a portion of the rotating field cycle allow selection of the translate or the idle modes.
