Abstract

Prior to acceptance of a magnetic recording disk for use in a disk store, the recording surface of the disk is subjected to stringent tests to determine whether there are defects in the disk surface which could lead to loss of data during use. Microscopic inspection of the defective areas often provides information which can be used during manufacture to improve the quality of subsequent disks. Since the defects occur at random over the recording surface, microscopic inspection of each can be a time-consuming task. The apparatus shown in plan view in Fig. 1 and in section in Fig. 2 simplifies this inspection procedure.

Microscopic inspection of the defective areas often provides information which can be used during manufacture to improve the quality of subsequent disks. Since the defects occur at random over the recording surface, microscopic inspection of each can be a time-consuming task. The apparatus shown in plan view in Fig. 1 and in section in Fig. 2 simplifies this inspection procedure.

The apparatus consists of a circular disk plate 1 mounted for rotation about a central hub 2 journal in a sliding plate 3. Two runners 4 of plate 3 are supported in guide-ways 5 formed in a plate 6 pivotally supported above a base plate 7 by a ball and cup joint 8.

The ball and cup joint 8 is designed so that its center of rotation C lies on the surface of a recording disk (not shown) on the disk plate 1. Thus no matter in which direction the disk plate is tilted, point C on the surface of the disk does not move.

Two screws 9 through the plate 6, orthogonally disposed with respect to the pivotal axis through the ball and cup joint 8, permit adjustment of the plane of the disk plate 1 with respect to the base plate 7.
