Optical Adjustment Tool

This optical adjustment tool allows both adjustment of a paraboloid mirror and inspection to identify defective mirrors.

The copier illumination system of U. S. Patent 3,758,774 provides an approximate point light source, mounted at the stationary focal point of a stationary paraboloid reflector. This reflector collimates the light and reflects it to a movable elliptic or parabolic cylinder reflector. This latter reflector moves to scan a line of light across a stationary original document which is to be copied.

This latter reflector moves along the copier's fixed-position rails 10 and 11. In order to adjust and inspect the copier's paraboloid reflector 12, a frame 13, which mounts four collimated light sources 14, is placed on rails 10 and 11 such that parallel light rays 15 are parallel to the rails.

A visually observable, or photosensor, target 16 is located at the position to be later occupied by the copier's point light source. Reflector 12 is now positionally adjusted such that all reflected rays 15 impinge upon the target. Reflector 12 is then permanently mounted in this position.
