Flying Spot Scanner

A flying spot scanner may be arranged to employ a plurality of optical sensor elements and the outputs of the elements used logically in threshold gray scale or image enhancement algorithms.

Used in this manner, the plurality of sensor elements save the use of data storage, which is needed if data from one sweep of a single element scanner is stored for use in an algorithm with data from subsequent sweeps.

Specifically, the plurality of sensor elements may be arranged in a matrix, such as 3 X 3, and their outputs combined either by analog or digital circuitry in accordance with a predetermined algorithm. The algorithm may be any of many well known algorithms to accomplish thresholding between black or white, gray scale, or image enhancement of one, generally the center, picture element scanned in accordance with the data from the other scanned picture elements of the matrix.
