Offset Head for Magnetic Scanner

This article describes an improved magnetic hand scanner head in which a head assembly is mounted in a suitable gimbal mount in a hand-held scanner for scanning magnetic storage media.

Referring to the figure, the lower portion of head assembly 3 is tilted or otherwise offset from the center line of the assembly, so that as the scanner is moved across the surface of a recording medium 5, the scanner head will, by virtue of the castoring effect, track the scanner assembly in such manner as to maximize the flux pickup from the recording media. The illustrated arrangement also has a magnetoresistive film-type pickup device 7, to which the leads 9 are attached, and which is mounted on a substrate 11 of suitable material. The opposite face of the element 7 is covered or enclosed by a relatively hard material 13, which acts as a bearing surface on the media 5, thereby reducing wear of the sensing element 7.
