This article describes an apparatus and technique for rapid detection of slugs or other foreign material in a matrix of holes in a sheet of material.

In multilayer ceramic packaging technology, green ceramic sheets are punched, thereby forming many very small holes. Conductive paste is screened into the holes and on the surface to provide internal electrical circuitry when a plurality of the sheets are assembled and sintered. However, prior to inserting paste into the holes, it is important to inspect the sheets to make certain that there is no obstruction to the paste in the holes. Obstructions occur when the hole is only partially punched, leaving a slug of green sheet partially in the aperture. Also, dust and debris particles in the air and on the green sheet handling apparatus can lodge in the holes. This debris and slugs must be detected and removed. Visual inspection is time consuming, tedious, expensive, and somewhat unreliable when operators must inspect over long periods of time.

This apparatus, shown in greatly enlarged scale in the illustration, is capable of detecting foreign particles, making possible the visual examination of a matrix of small holes. The holes in a typical green sheet are about 5 to 6 mils in diameter and randomly spaced approximately 20 mils apart, and can number upwards of 32,000 holes in a four square inch area.
