Improved Solubility Pyrazoline for Electrochromic Formulations

Electrochromic formulations utilizing pyrazoline compounds have low density due in part to a lack of solubility.

It was discovered that improved solubility and optical density could be achieved by using the above pyrazoline compound which can be prepared from the dipropylanino benzaldehyde, which in turn is prepared in good yield using a Vilsmeier-Haack reaction.

This pyrazoline is extremely soluble in organic solvents, and therefore can be incorporated at high concentrations in formulations. When high concentrations of this pyrazoline are used, an improvement in density of about a factor of two is observed. The solubility improvement is effected by having propyl or longer alkyl groups on the nitrogen moieties in the -3 and -5 pyrazoline positions.
