Abstract

The apparatus selects individual characters for projection onto an image plane, as in a photocomposing system. The arrangement in A includes stationary character matrix 1 that is replaceable and strobe lamp 2 that is fired in synchronism with rotation of lens assembly 3. The latter includes lens element 4 that is rotated in front of each character in matrix 1. Firing of lamp 2 creates an image through lens 4 and lens 5 with the selected character being projected and focused onto point 7. The arrangement in E is similar with the exception that plate 8 has aperture 9 that is rotated in front of the individual characters in matrix 1a. The selection and projection of characters through lens 5a to point 7a occurs in a similar manner.
