Abstract

This apparatus coats wire with insulation, producing multifilar wire cable. Quad filar cable with very narrow gauge copper wire is produced. Supply spools 10 provide individual strands of bare copper wire which are positioned by aligning bar 12 and grooved guide spool 14. The wire then passes through a polyamide-imide solution in tank 16 and over grooved guide spool 18. Wiper blade 20 removes excess coatings as a jet of hot gas comes through the lower vent of heated tube 22 to set the coating into a jelled structure and maintain good dimensional reproducibility. Heat is injected into tube 22 by supply tubes 24. Vacuum insulation 26 helps maintain the high temperature. The cable is drawn through tube 22 and over idler spools 28 and 30 onto the motor driven storage reel 32 which stores the completed quad filar ribbon cable.
