Abstract

A manual selection mechanism for a printer positions a single element, rotatable typehead by moving a pointer arm over a letter selector plate to align the selected character for printing. The typehead is free to travel back and forth across the printer while the copy sheet is held stationary. The typehead is a rotating head having a plurality of vertically arranged flexible type fingers. An impact hammer inside the head pushes the selected flexible type finger against the paper.

A manual selection mechanism for a printer positions a single element, rotatable typehead by moving a pointer arm over a letter selector plate to align the selected character for printing.

The typehead is free to travel back and forth across the printer while the copy sheet is held stationary. The typehead is a rotating head having a plurality of vertically arranged flexible type fingers.

An impact hammer inside the head pushes the selected flexible type finger against the paper.

To permit travel of the head along the copy sheet as each character is printed without affecting character selection, square drive shaft 13 carries miter gear 15. The latter is adapted to turn with shaft 13 but is free to slide along it. Gear 15 drives vertical shaft 17 which is geared to head 11. This is mounted on sliding carriage 19. Flexible pointer arm 21 is mounted on carriage 23. Such is adapted to slide to the left or right on two horizontal shafts and is positioned by the movement of flexible arm 21 back and forth over selector plate 25. This has a series of holes which correspond to the letters on the flexible fingers of typehead
