Low-voltage components provide series regulation for a high-voltage output. A secondary voltage source for powering the series regulating components is coupled in series with main voltage source 10 in such a manner that the regulator components are isolated from the high voltage.

Source 10 provides the primary portion of the relatively high voltage to be regulated at output terminals 11 and 12. Transistor 15 provides the series regulating pass element. Differential amplifier 16 provides the control to the base of 15. A reference divider, including zener diode 18, generates the reference voltage input to 16 while the output voltage is sampled at node 20. Secondary source 22 is coupled in series with 10 and 15 to 11 and 12, and is connected to provide collector-emitter current for transistors 24 and 25 of amplifier 16. The circuit is arranged such that, for the input voltage at 10, delta Vin </- BVcbo for transistor 15. Thus, all elements within the circuit other than the collector of 15, the sampling network, and reference source network are connected to low potential points with respect to the regulated output return.

By comparing the potential at 20 with the reference, 24 increases conduction when the output at 11 and 12 increases, thus causing 25 to decrease conduction.
