Abstract

This technique is for driving transmission lines and controlling reflections without dissipating quiescent power. The technique involves the use of a transmission line which interconnects high-speed logic circuits with a series termination at the sending and an unterminated receiving end. The series termination can be a physical resistor between the low-output impedance driver and the transmission line as shown or it can consist of the linear or nonlinear output impedance of the driving circuit. Using this type of a connection, power is dissipated mostly in charging and discharging the transmission line with quiescent power only supplying the DC current needed for the inputs of the circuits. This technique reduces the quiescent power dissipation of a logic circuit by several orders of magnitude.
