Abstract

The mechanism is for accurately locating read head 1 in position for detecting indicia on card 2. Read head 1 comprises a series of detectors 3 which are energized simultaneously to read data at the time of actuation of one of three trailing edge switches 6, 7, and 8. Thus by moving head 1 laterally across the path of card 2 and by selecting the desired trailing edge switch, specific areas of such card can be read.

Column Select Mechanism

The mechanism is for accurately locating read head 1 in position for detecting indicia on card 2. Read head 1 comprises a series of detectors 3 which are energized simultaneously to read data at the time of actuation of one of three trailing edge switches 6, 7, and 8. Thus by moving head 1 laterally across the path of card 2 and by selecting the desired trailing edge switch, specific areas of such card can be read.

Head 1 is supported on drive bands 9 trained about pulleys 10 on pulley shaft
11. Also fixed to shaft 11 are detent cams A, B, and C cooperating with stops 12 to hold head 1 at a selected position. For turning the pulley shaft to shift the head 1 position, gears 13 mesh with gears 14 slideably mounted on control shaft 15. The latter is rotated and shifted longitudinally to one of the three detent positions a, b, and c by turning and pushing on knob 16. Cam 17 fixed to shaft 15 actuates one of the switches 18 to energize one of the trailing edge switches.

As the knob is shifted, characters 19 appear in the window 20 of a stationary sleeve 21. Characters 19 indicate which combination of head position and trailing edge switch is selected and thus signals which area of the card is to be read.
