Abstract

This adapter assembly is used with a transfer press for molding metals and thermoplastic materials. Housing 10 fits into the particular press bushing or platen being used. Plunger 14 is attached to the plunger of the transfer press. In operation, the liquid material to be used is placed in reservoir 16 and maintained in a molten state by heating band 18. The pressure on plunger 14 is increased until a sufficient pressure is exerted against valve 22 to lift it and allow the material to pass through injection nozzle 24.

This adapter assembly is used with a transfer press for molding metals and thermoplastic materials. Housing 10 fits into the particular press bushing or platen being used. Plunger 14 is attached to the plunger of the transfer press. In operation, the liquid material to be used is placed in reservoir 16 and maintained in a molten state by heating band 18. The pressure on plunger 14 is increased until a sufficient pressure is exerted against valve 22 to lift it and allow the material to pass through injection nozzle 24.

In addition, this force on the area of reservoir 16 clamps the adapter against the die. The molten material thus squeezed through nozzle 24 is then utilized in a desired mold or die cavity. In order to adjust the pressure of material injected through nozzle 24, the pressure on valve 22 is variable by the selection and adjustment of preload springs 26 as well as by air pressure injectable through air inlet 28.

This adapter effectively adapts a transfer press for molding metals and thermoplastic materials as in die casting. Area A in reservoir 16 exceeds the corresponding cavity area in the mold, not shown, thus creating a clamping differential enabling the clamping of nozzle 24 against the die opening. A heat differential is maintained between the adapter and die as the only contact is in the area of nozzle 24.
