Abstract

A superplastic alloy is a metal alloy which unlike metals has characteristics similar to plastics. The alloy can be thermoformed like plastics because of the stretch characteristics of the alloy when heated beyond a certain temperature. Superplastic alloy 10 to be thermoformed is located across the top of tool or die 12 formed into the desired shape. A vacuum is created between the alloy and the tool so that alloy blank 10 is pulled into die 12. The heating of alloy 10 is provided by infrared lamp 14 located at the focal line of elliptical reflector 16. The infrared radiation is focused and directed at alloy 10. The heat is sufficient to raise the alloy temperature above the critical temperature at which the alloy becomes superplastic. Alloy 10, under the influence of the vacuum, forms into the configuration of tool 12.
