Abstract

Coaxial cables 10 can be bonded in molded plastic terminal members 12. These have cavities in which metal 14, 16 and 18 is injected so as to permit electrical connections in the form of spring contacts 20 to be made to the coaxial cable. This enables connections to be made with a minimum discontinuity in the electrical characteristics cable 10 and contacts 20.

Coaxial cables 10 can be bonded in molded plastic terminal members 12. These have cavities in which metal 14, 16 and 18 is injected so as to permit electrical connections in the form of spring contacts 20 to be made to the coaxial cable. This enables connections to be made with a minimum discontinuity in the electrical characteristics cable 10 and contacts 20.

Plastic member 12 is a hollow molded structure having a central cavity into which the end of coaxial cable 10 is inserted. Once cable 10 is inserted into member 12 metal is injected into its openings. The injected metal then makes separate contact with central conductor 22 and outer shield 24. Connections are made to conductor 22 and shield 24 of cable 10 by contacting lands 30 and 32 on the surface of member 12. Metal 18 is also injected into helical space 26 around cable 10 so that the metal grasps cable 10 and holds it in member 12.

Member 12 is shaped to perform desired functions. Polarizing key 28 is provided to assure that the signal and ground lands 30 and 32 are properly oriented when member 12 is inserted into a connector. Detent well 34 is also supplied to provide an indication when terminal 12 is fully inserted into the connector. Finally, an extraction slot 36 enables easy removal of the plastic member from the connector.
