Abstract

The clutch includes clutch plates 10 and 12, the former being driven by a motor and the latter connected to the load to be driven. Plate 12 has a centrally placed opening which connects through opening 14 in shaft 16 to an air pressure control mechanism in sealed bearing chamber 18. Orifices 20 in shaft 16 couple to chamber 22 which is in turn connected to an air pressure control line 24. When the clutch is to be engaged, a vacuum is applied to line 24 to cause shaft 16 and plate 12 to move to the left and engage. Disengagement of the clutch is effected by applying a pressure above atmospheric to line 24 thus moving plate 12 to the right and at the same time providing an air bearing film between plates 10 and 12. Therefore, only a very small lateral movement is required for plate 12 between the engaged and disengaged position.
