Abstract

The precision peripherally configured cavity is for molding powdered metal compacts under high loads in cooperation with configured punch 11 and steel bottom plate 12. Cavity 10 is provided by transferring a slug of material 13 such as the eutectoid of 73% zinc, 22% aluminum, conditioned as described in U. S. Patent 3,340,101 through restricted orifice 14 into cavity 15 of die block 16. Cavity 10 is formed by punch and steel bottom plate 12. Transfer assembly 15 is removed after molding and replaced by plate 12 of sufficient strength to resist the direct loading required for compacting powdered metals. The peripheral walls of cavity 10 are capable of easily withstanding the lateral loads incurred during compaction since such lateral loads are but a fraction of the direct or axial load necessary for proper compaction.
