Abstract

Aligned underscoring in a proportional spacing typewriter is simplified by providing a modified card holder 10. The latter includes a pair of scribe lines 11 and 12 which are spaced a distance 13 equal to the length of the underscore character. Holder 10 indicates the print position when displaced to the right against spring 15 to the limit of slots 14. With holder 10 in its displaced position, the operator can observe both the beginning and ending of an underscore character if typed. The typewriter carriage thus can be repositioned to align either the front or trailing edge of the underscore character with the beginning and ending characters of the word to be underscored.
