Abstract

A keyboard controlled printer with typefont 10 is selectively positioned by electromagnetic positioning devices 18 in response to operation of a key 12 which closes a combination of electric contacts 14 through bails 11 operated in response to depression of the key. The coded output of bails 11 is generally based on the optimization of mechanical movement of typefont 10. In those instances where there is a need for an electrical output different from the coded switch closings, translator 16 is used. Where a translator with optimum circuit configuration is desired, translator 16 is accordingly arranged and typefont 10 redesigned to position characters on it in accordance with the coded output from switches 14 to provide the required input to translator 16 to permit this optimization of arrangement.
