Abstract

This liquid metal probe makes temporary contacts in nondestructive electrical measurements. Liquid metal, such as Hg, is enclosed in reservoir 1, connected to probe 2. The latter contacts sample 3 in an inverted manner. Reservoir 1 is movable in the direction of the arrow to bring the liquid metal into contact with sample 3 and to exert a desired hydrostatic pressure at the contact. The reservoir arrangement also insures that probe 2 can be withdrawn without spilling liquid metal onto sample 3. Sample 3 is held against sample holder 4 by suction from vacuum source 5. Micrometer 6 brings probe 2 into position and maintains a constant pressure relationship with sample 3.
