Serial Hopper

In drawing A, card deck 10 rests on edge on a pair of belts 11 which progress over hopper bed 12 toward stationary rear wall 13. Deck 10 is supported in the upright position by a card weight, not shown, which rests on belts 11 and engages deck surface 15.

Cards are fed singly and consecutively between rear wall surface 16 and throat knife 17 by frictional contact with a series of feed rolls 19 rotating in unison about a common axis. Deck 10 is normally retained out of contact with feed rolls 19 by a deck lifter assembly 21 which presents a series of deck lifters 22 positioned intermediate and adjoining rolls 19. Assembly 21 is supported on a pair of leaf spring support elements 24 and actuated to execute a feed operation by energizing coil 25. Such causes assembly 21 to retract and permit rolls 19 to contact and feed the adjoining card through the throat. Both rolls 19 and lifters 22 are positioned to engage the noninformation areas of cards being fed to avoid web tearing.

A vacuum is applied through the vertical slotted portion of wall 13 through which rolls 19 and lifters 22 project and through slotted openings 27 to respectively effect good driving contact between card and rolls 19 and to align the card leading portion with the throat opening. Slots 27 are aligned, as feed rolls 19 and lifters 22, to cooperate with the noninformation areas intermediate rows of punched holes. Surface 29 of wall 13 is tapered away from deck 10 to eliminate the rest...
