Abstract

These two classes of azo compounds are sensitizers for polyvinyl carbazole. Class 1 compounds contain only a single nitro or a multiplicity of nitro substituents on the aromatic ring. Class 2 compounds contain both nitro substituents and either hydroxy or carboxy substituents. Class 1 compounds yield electrophotographic sensitizers for polyvinyl carbazole which do not display persistent conductivity. Class 2 compounds display persistent conductivity. They also act as cosensitizers for dyes such as Malachite Greer Oxalate and in general for the triphenylmethane type dyes. Examples of Class 1 compounds are: a. 2,2',4,4',6 - pentanitroazobenzene b. 2,2',4,4' - tetranitroazobenzene c. 3,3' - dinitroazobenzene. Examples of Class 2 compounds are: a. 2,4,3' - Trinitro - 2',4' dihydroxyazobenzene b.
