Abstract

Rotation of detent wheel 1 is controlled by two identical pawl mechanisms as in drawing 1. A detail of one mechanism, viewed from direction A is in drawing 2 and a further detail, viewed from direction B, is in drawing 3. Each pawl 2 is mounted on a leaf-spring 3 and is provided with a soft iron crosspiece 4 at one end which is located within two solenoid coils 5 and 6. Pawl 2 is normally held in engagement with wheel 1 by the action of spring 7. In this position, crosspiece 4 is centrally positioned within coils 5 and 6 adjacent fixed soft iron bar 8. When coils 5 and 6 are energized, like poles are generated in bar 8 and crosspiece 4, causing mutual repulsion. Since bar 8 is fixed, crosspiece 4 moves away so that pawl 2 disengages wheel 1.

U-shaped soft iron bar 9 is positioned around coils 5 and 6 to provide a closed magnetic path for crosspiece 4 when it is fully deflected. The deflection is assisted by mutual attraction between crosspiece 4 and bar 9. Pole pieces 10 of bar 9 are furnished with nonferrous faces so that, on cessation of energizing current to coils 5 and 6, pawl 2 drops back immediately to engage wheel 1.
