Abstract

A storage element consisting of a pair of magnetic thin films 1 and 2, positioned one above the other with their easy axes ES and ER at right angles to one another, is shown in drawing 1. A matrix of such elements with word lines 3 passing between the films parallel to the easy axis of the upper film 1 and bit lines 4 overlaying the elements at right angles to the word lines can be interrogated associatively.

Associative Store

A storage element consisting of a pair of magnetic thin films 1 and 2, positioned one above the other with their easy axes ES and ER at right angles to one another, is shown in drawing 1. A matrix of such elements with word lines 3 passing between the films parallel to the easy axis of the upper film 1 and bit lines 4 overlaying the elements at right angles to the word lines can be interrogated associatively.

Each storage element has four stable magnetic states, two of which are represented in drawings 2 and 3. The stable state in drawing 2 represents a stored 1 and that in drawing 3 represent a stored 0. Vector MS represents the direction of magnetization of film 1. Vector MR represents the direction of magnetization of readout film 2 of an element. Both vectors are rotated from the easy direction by the hard axis bias from the other film of the pair.

An element is associatively interrogated by applying a DC signal to the associated bit line 4. The polarity of the DC signal represents the information content of the interrogation word. Thus in this example, a positive level DC signal represents a 1 and a negative level signal represents a 0. The magnitude of the DC signal is chosen so that either realigns vector MR of film 2 with its easy axis or rotates it even further away from the axis. Thus, vector MR of an element storing a 1 as shown by the dashed arrows in drawing 4 is realigned with the easy axis ER where a positive DC signal is applied t...
