Abstract

In a plasma display panel for information storage and display, the application of drive signals of proper amplitude and polarity to external conductors produces a discharge condition in the associated cell area and a wall charge buildup on opposite cell walls. In the drawing horizontal and vertical drive lines on opposite sides of the panel produce individual character matrices. In these, the area under selected intersections is lighted by producing a gas discharge to generate characters as a sequence of dots. One of the problems in such displays is the high potential required to select individual cells. One method of permitting lower firing and sustaining voltages is to utilize the properties of photo-initiation.

This is effected by a light source incident on the cell area to produce a source of particles within the cell area enabling the discharge to occur at a lower potential.

In a typical panel construction, a series of horizontal lines 1 and vertical lines 3 in the form of transparent conductors are deposited on opposite glass surfaces of panel 5. The intersections of these lines on areas such as 7 and 9 define character matrices for generating and displaying alphanumeric or special characters as a sequence of dots by coincident selection. Positioned between rows of characters are transparent metal buses 11 which also comprise transparent metallic conductors deposited on the front surface of the panel.
