Abstract

The system measures the characteristics of automotive ignition distributors. Drive motor 10 rotates the drive of distributor 11 at a speed directed by computer 12 with speed control 13 in accordance with a predetermined program. Computer 12 also operates vacuum advance drive 14 to supply a predetermined vacuum, via hose 15, to the advance mechanism 16 of distributor 11. Drive 14 can comprise a vacuum pump and a plurality of electrically operated valves. The distributor drive is connected via mechanical coupler 17 to pulse generating tachometer 18.

The system measures the characteristics of automotive ignition distributors. Computer 12 also operates vacuum advance drive 14 to supply a predetermined vacuum, via hose 15, to the advance mechanism 16 of distributor 11. Drive 14 can comprise a vacuum pump and a plurality of electrically operated valves. The distributor drive is connected via mechanical coupler 17 to pulse generating tachometer 18.

The pulse rate of the output pulses supplied to computer 12 indicates the speed of rotation of the distributor drive. The contact points of distributor 11 are connected to circuit 19 which generates a pulse upon the opening of such points. This pulse is connected to a process interrupt in computer 12. Circuit 19 generates a different pulse upon the closing of the distributor contact points. This pulse is connected to a different process interrupt.

The inputs from circuits 18 and 19 are employed by computer 12 to measure dwell, lobe synchronization and advance. A signal indicating closing of the points generates an interrupt in computer 12, starting a pulse counter recording pulses from tachometer 18.
