Abstract

A process is available in which a photoconductive member comprises a photoconductive layer carrying an insulating layer and is electrostatically charged with charges of a first polarity and uniformly exposed either simultaneously or sequentially. Next, the photoconductive member is simultaneously electrostatically charged with charges of opposite polarity and exposed to an image. Optionally, the photoconductive member is uniformly exposed after the electrostatic image is formed. The image thus formed on the photoconductive element is developed and transferred to paper. To eliminate the transfer step, the available process can be modified as follows.

A process is available in which a photoconductive member comprises a photoconductive layer carrying an insulating layer and is electrostatically charged with charges of a first polarity and uniformly exposed either simultaneously or sequentially. Next, the photoconductive member is simultaneously electrostatically charged with charges of opposite polarity and exposed to an image. Optionally, the photoconductive member is uniformly exposed after the electrostatic image is formed. The image thus formed on the photoconductive element is developed and transferred to paper. To eliminate the transfer step, the available process can be modified as follows. In place of the insulating layer, which normally is permanently fixed to the photoconductive layer, paper, which is treated by heating or otherwise so as to remove any moisture and thus raise its resistivity, is brought into contact with the photoconductive layer. This element is then used in the available process steps, but, after development of the image, the paper is removed from the photoconductive layer and the developed image is permanently fixed to it.
