Abstract

This automatic wire bond tester records the strength of a large number of bonds without intervention of a human operator. Rows and columns of wires 2 are bound to board 1. Shoe 3 is positioned under wire loops 2 by X-Y positioner 4. Photoelectric sensor 5 stops the movement of positioner 4 when wire 2a is positioned between anvil pairs 6-8 and 7-9 which clamp wire 2a. Knife 10 cuts wire 2a. Control 12 raises anvil pairs 6-8 and 7-9, breaking a wire loop into two strands. Each strand is pulled separately in turn. The amount of force necessary to break each of the two bonds is measured in control 12 and fed to computer 11 which records the peak force. Positioner 4 then moves shoe 3 together with the clamping and cutting assembly to the next wire.
