Abstract

Reversible drive mechanism 10 has spaced drive wheels 12 and 18 rotating in the same plane about parallel rotational shafts 11 and 17. Drive wheel 19 is positioned in-between wheels 12 and 18 and is supported to rotate about axle 21 on pendulum arm 20 through gear 22. Engaged with gear 22 is gear 24 which serves as a power take-off and is fixed to output shaft 25 about which arm 20 pivots. Arm 20 extends between electromagnets 26 and 27 with coils 28 and 29 respectively. By energization of one of the coils, the respective electromagnet attracts end of arm 20 and thus causes wheel 19 to swing in a direction normal to axis of rotation of wheels 12 and 18. Wheel 19 moves into driving engagement with a selected one of wheels 12 or 18 and rotates gear 22 and 24 for driving output shaft in one or the other direction.
