Display Hyphenate Scan

The editing display device incorporates hyphen control logic. This is effective to rapidly appraise the machine operator of words which may be hyphenated prior to producing a final output copy.

Words of text of a message being composed are stored in text storage 13 and displayed on display device 15 under the control of display control 17. Format and line storage 19 specifies the maximum number of characters which can be displayed on a particular line of display. Logic control 21 maximizes the number of words which can appear on each line. Since words are not split, there is generally extra space located at the end of each line which is not sufficient to contain the next subsequent word that appears as the first word on the next line of display.

In order to appraise the operator whether a portion of a first word on a line can be hyphenated, special cursor 23 is displayed relative to the displayed text and indicates that the number of characters appearing to the left of the cursor may be inserted on the preceding line. Allowance is made for the interword space separating the last word from the first syllable of the word to be hyphenated and for a hyphen mark. Unit 25 determines the number of characters of the first line. Allowance is made for the interword space separating the last word from the first syllable of the word to be hyphenated and for a hyphen mark. Unit 25 determines the number of characters of the first word of a line which may thus fit onto a preceding line and provides a signal to cursor control unit 27 which effects the physical placement of cursor 23 through control
