Dual Print Buffer Arrangement

Buffers 10 and 11 in computer unit 12 are provided for printer 13 in multifunction card unit 14. Thus, it is possible to operate on one document card 15 passing through the print station of the multifunction card unit while another card is approaching the print station.

Buffers 10 and 11 are located adjacent to each other in core section 16 of computer 12 which is connected by control cable 17 with unit 14. The latter includes wait station 18, punch station 19, and corner station 20 in addition to the station at printer 13. Punch data buffer 21 in section 16 is also connected by control cable 17 with unit 14.

By using print buffers 10 and 11, punching and printing can be overlapped. Two cards 15 are contained in station 18. Data for one of the cards can be assembled in the punch data buffer 21 and buffer 10. A command can be given to punch and print this card using buffer 10. When this card is punched in station 19, data for the second card can be led in buffer 21 and buffer 11. The command can then be given to punch and print the second card using buffer 11. While the second card is being punched, the first card is being printed upon from buffer 10. Subsequently, the second card is printed upon from buffer 11. All of the commands with respect to a particular card 15 are given when card 15 is in station 18, each command containing punching and printing information. Two cards 15 simultaneously pass through unit 14, one being punched a...
