Abstract

The chemical hexafluoroacetone sesquihydrate is a powerful solvent for polymer compounds. Of most significance is the ability to dissolve acetal compounds such as DELRIN* and CELCON**, Nylons, Polyamides, and Polyester films, Polyethylene terephthalate, such as MYLAR*. This property can be utilized for improving the adhesion of coatings such as magnetic recording coating to polyester films or tapes, Polyethylene terephthalate such as MYSAR, CELANAR**, etc. The solvent, hexafluoroace-tone sesquihydrate, can be used as a surface etching agent, a light roughening of the surface, of polyester tapes or a primer causing the surface of the polyester tape to become tacky. With the surface of the polyester tape etched or tacky, a coating such as a magnetic coating has improved adhesion to it.
