Electrostatic Light Switch

Reliable indication of the on or off state of electronic circuits is achieved by this electrostatic light switch without the use of individual indicator drivers.

One common light source 1 is used for each console display with the light being transmitted through individual light pipes 2 to a control block 3. Each sealed control block chamber contains an opaque electret 4 and a conductive plate 5. The latter, connected to the circuit by wire 6, is covered with an insulating layer 7. Light pipe 8 between control block 3 and lens 9 conducts the light to the outside of the display console.

The electret is moved into or out of the path of light by the attraction or repulsion of electrostatic charges affected by the presence or absence of voltage applied to the conducting plate.
