Abstract

The system comprises a flying spot scanner 5 and 7 operated by scan pattern generators 9 and 11. Vertical scan generator 9 is governed by raster control 13 as well as by vertical position control circuits 15. Horizontal scan generator 11 is governed jointly by horizontal position control 17 and raster control 13. The positions of the various scans are controlled by position control circuits 18.

The light reflected from document 3 and the characters on it are supplied to photodetector 19 and 21 connected to a plurality of circuits 23, 25, and 27. These determine the level of the resultant signal and are designated, respectively, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 clip level circuits. These circuits govern the position control and raster control circuits. Also, the output signal of the 1/2 level 25 is supplied to data storage circuit 29. This also receives inputs from circuits 18 and 13. Data storage 29 is connected to data decoding circuits 31 which supply their output signals to a utilization device.

In its search-detect mode of operation, the system finds the next character to be recognized and adjusts the raster with respect to the left edge of the character. This lateral adjustment takes one of two values under the control of circuits 23 and 27, depending upon the reduction of light reflectance amounting to between 1/4 and 3/4 or to more than that.
