Three Dimensional Capacitor Read Only Storage

A plated through-hole 10 with a pin 12 passing through the middle of it can be used as a storage element in a three-dimensional reed-only store.

Planes, each with an array of plated through-holes 10 are stacked one upon the other to form the read-only store. Each plane is formed from a double-sided laminate having copper plate on each side of an epoxy glass dielectric support
14. The sense lines 16 and tabs 18 are etched in the copper on one side of support 14 to connect the plated through-holes 10 in rows.

The copper on the other side of support 14 serves as a ground plane 20 which is isolated from the plated through-holes by an annular space etched in the copper around each hole 10. A pin 12 with a dielectric coating on it is passed through each column of holes 10 to form the drive lines for the store. An insulating spacer 22 electrically isolates the planes one from the other. Information is placed in the store by removing tabs 18 at the locations where a 0 is to be stored. Where the tabs 18 are not removed a 1 is stored.
