Abstract

Because ferrite memory cores have magnetostriction, they tend to oscillate mechanically in response to the current pulses that operate the memory. Memory cores are usually given a sprayed-on coating that helps to damp the oscillations. In this coating method, the cores are oscillated mechanically and a signal corresponding to the oscillation is used to control the amount of spray applied to the cores.

Because ferrite memory cores have magnetostriction, they tend to oscillate mechanically in response to the current pulses that operate the memory. Memory cores are usually given a sprayed-on coating that helps to damp the oscillations. In this coating method, the cores are oscillated mechanically and a signal corresponding to the oscillation is used to control the amount of spray applied to the cores.

The cores can be oscillated by energizing a driver to apply current pulses to the drive wires. The cores can be oscillated in other ways such as by an audio source of suitable frequency.

The oscillations can be detected in an oscillation sensor as a voltage on one of the wires threading the cores. The sensor is connected to control a sprayer that applies the coating. The cores are sprayed to a coating thickness at which the oscillations are damped out.
