Identification Card and Transport Mechanism

This identification card and transport enables the card holder to progress toward the ultimate destination as the data on the card is processed.

Card 10 is of conventional laminated construction except for an elongated wedge 12 of magnetic material, such as soft iron or steel, inserted along one of the longer edges of the card. The wedge shape facilitates fabrication and prevents undue wrinkling of both card stock and wedge due to mishandling by the card holder.

The transport comprises continuously moving elongated belt 20 having a multiple of permanent magnets 22 fixed to it. The wide edge of wedge 12 holds the card 10 erect on belt 20 due to the attractive force of magnets 22. Card reader 30 is conventional except for an open throat feature so that the card holder is free to regain the card at any instant if it is so chosen. Stop device 36 is provided at the end of belt 20 so that card 10 can slip with respect to belt 20 and remain available to the card holder.

Optical or magnetic reading of fixed data is used for detecting holes 11 in wedge 12 of card 10. Variable data can be added to card 10 on magnetic strip
13. The data can be so recorded that it is readable in either of the two possible directions in which the card can be placed on belt 20. Alternatively, card 10 can carry data effecting an automatic reversal of card 10 in the reader if it is necessary.
